Huawei has gone from strength to strength in recent years, and the P30 Pro is its most accomplished smartphone to date. These include video and photo editing, multi-tab browsing and hard-core gaming at highest settings. Apple and Samsung flagships beat it out in the benchmarks, but you're unlikely to notice any difference in day-to-day use. Android 9.0 is preinstalled along with EMUI 9.1. If you've never used Huawei's interface before, you're in for a few big surprises. It's quite a heavy skin, and some core Android features, including the app drawer, have been eliminated. Battery Life With their gradient finishes and solid build quality, Huawei phones have managed to stand their ground in the flagship space and become easy to recognize in an ocean of me-too rectangular slabs. Third, the Huawei P30 Pro has seen an upgrade to its camera zoom capabilities. This time around you’ll find an 8-megapixel, f/3.4 unit with up to 5x optical zoom – a big upgrade on last year’s 3x zoom. Huawei has achieved this by using a periscope-style housing, tilting the camera on its side and capturing the image via a tiny mirror. This is why, if you look closely enough, this third camera is square in appearance, not circular. photos maximum, each photo's size should be less than 10MB (bmp, jpg, png, gif, and jpeg are supported) Somehow, this must have been toggled to the 'off' position, and I have NO idea how or why this function should be impacting my headphones from working... but I don't really care at this point. Huawei appears to be aware of this, sort of, as in some markets it provides a translucent silicone case in the box with the phone, providing some much-needed grip and light protection while not spoiling the design. However, those in the UK won't get this in the box. The sensors are arranged in "periscope" format, enabling not only 5x optical zoom, but 10x lossless hybrid zoom and up to 50x digital super zoom. Testers note that quality shows only minor degradation up to approximately 32x zoom under favourable lighting conditions. The camera also focuses unbelievably fast (far faster than the Google Pixel 3) -- a quality that is of particular advantage in Night Mode. Night Mode is further boosted by the SuperSpectrum (RYYB) pixel arrangement which, according to Huawei, allows 40% more light into the camera. A Time of Flight (ToF) sensor is also on board, boosting bokeh effects with its ultra-depth sensing capabilities. AI-supported shooting rounds out the offering, ensuring that auto-mode optimises all shots. Video quality is also acceptable, but not nearly as high as that of the stills. Compare Prices on Powerful Phones Finally, the Huawei P30 Pro comes with an IP68 rating, meaning it’s dust- and water-resistant, and able to withstand being submerged for up to 30 minutes in fresh water. The same can’t be said about Huawei’s fiddly camera app. It’s overly complex and can be an incredibly convoluted and confusing experience, even for veteran photographers. If you want to access the wide-angle and zoom shooting modes, for instance, you have to switch from the phone’s maximum 40-megapixel shooting resolution to 10-megapixels and tediously cycle through each mode. There’s nothing in the camera software that tells you this beforehand. Huawei P30 Pro review: Verdict The 6.47-inch AMOLED screen on the Huawei P30 Pro has a Full HD+ resolution (1080x2340 pixels), making it not the most pixel-dense around, but definitely sharp enough so that you see no actual pixelization in daily use. A Quad HD screen would have also put a higher load on the battery, so we don’t really mind.
