“ I have managed to lose a well needed 22lbs!”

What can I say?!....... As a long retired ex-rugby player, majorly going to seed, determined to get fit fast in preparation to run this year’s Edinburgh Marathon..... I was so glad that my wife discovered studioEH1- Power Plate, convincing me that it’s not just for girls. What was good enough for the Scottish Rugby team must be good enough for me.

Having tried many fitness regimes over the years; some more successful than others - Power Plate and the tortuous circuits dished out by the trainers three times a week, regularly makes my muscles ignite!

The beauty of each session only lasting 25 minutes means I know I can really go for it! The mixture of power, balance and aerobic work outs, have made this a fantastic way in building my core strength and stamina, which gave my marathon training a real boost.

The results since February have been fantastic, which has made it amazingly rewarding – especially when you see Luke down on his hands and knees mopping up my pools of sweat! I have managed to lose a well needed 22lbs and all my MOT results are moving significantly in the right direction.

The dietary advice encouraged me to make some life changing decisions, which has augmented my overall health and wellbeing. The personal approach and good natured banter from all the Trainers makes it a pleasure to be part of the “Platters’” community.

The motivation and support is second to none – and the enthusiasm to help me reach my goals has made every session really worth doing. The best, most efficient and effective training I have ever experienced.
Now I can start really working on the abs to convert my “keg” into a “six pack”.

Good vibrations - I highly recommend this fitness solution - thanks to all the team at studioEH1.

“I can’t run yet, I can’t skate but I need to get stronger”

I’m used to giving the orders but I’ve been on the receiving end as I continue my rehabilitation from knee surgery.

Former soldier Luke McMullen is putting me through hell at studioEH1. I’m using Power Plate – a machine that vibrates and puts you off balance, engaging small muscle fibres that you don’t normally use.

I’m trying to strengthen muscles especially around my knee. My hamstrings, quads and backside have fallen apart following the injury and a lot of things I would do normally during the course of a season, I can’t do.

The machine is excellent for rehabilitation and is also a way of getting my upper body and core stronger. What I am trying to do is to gain strength and fitness in an unorthodox way. I can’t run yet, I can’t skate but I need to get stronger without putting my body in a tough position.

I found studioEH1 through the Space Clinic (link to Space), who look after the Team. They thought I would be better off with a specialist like Luke, who served in the army for six years in places like Bosnia and Iraq. He is a serious guy, who is also a recreational ice hockey player. It’s nice to have someone who is really serious about conditioning and performance and understands the game of hockey.

The treatment is definitely on the cutting edge. I do not rest for 30 minutes and go from one exercise using one muscle group immediately to another.

At the end of it I’m exhausted. It’s tough and miserable. I did 140 press ups the other day and Luke loves to make me do that kind of stuff. I can’t lift my arms now but it’s working. I need a guy like Luke to push me. When you’re working on your own you do two or three exercises and grab a drink, talk to somebody then you do a couple more then it’s time for the sauna – this is no joke for 30 minutes solid.

studioEH1 also have a professional golfer and two people from the Gladiators TV show that they are training and they are trying to branch out into professional sport.

As far as Luke goes, I can’t stand him when I’m doing his workouts but we have a good laugh when all the training is done.

At the start of the year I was asked to have a few photographs taken that could be used in some publicity shots for the business. There must have been something wrong with the camera because each and every photograph seemed to make me look overweight! At about the same time a friend asked me if I might be interested in walking the West Highland Way. When he explained that would involve five consecutive days of walking around 20 miles a day over rough terrain I realised that I would have to get myself into some sort of shape.

Add to that the fact that since my rugby playing days I have had constant lower back problems culminating in surgery on two discs and I was probably a prime candidate for something like Power Plate®.

For several years I had been a member of a gym but I found it difficult to get into any sort of regular routine. I would go at it flat out for two or three weeks until something would cause me to miss a couple of sessions and before I knew it the enthusiasm had gone and I would find all sorts of excuses for not going.

I had read about Power Plate® and that there was a studio just round the corner from the office. One of my partners in the office agreed to come along with me for a trial session and we both enjoyed it so much that we signed up for a three month term.

There are lots of positives as far as I am concerned. Firstly, I can turn up for a session at 8.30am and be behind my desk feeling refreshed and ready for the day around 35 minutes later. It is over so quickly that it is easy to keep pushing yourself for the full session.

The staff have been great and there is always plenty friendly backchat and humour which helps to keep your mind of the pain!! Because there is always someone there taking you through the session there is no time wasted and every minute of the workout is filled. It certainly beats wandering about a gym waiting for equipment to become free.

The effect after only three months was very evident when I took on the West Highland Way. My legs coped no problem and I was able to take on the steep climbs without any real difficulty. I even took time out at the top of Conic Hill to send a text to Helen and Ian saying how good I felt.

I have had no back problems since I started and that must be down to the improved core strength. The only down side is that I have had to get rid of every suit that I had in the wardrobe as I have gone from a 38” waist to somewhere 36” and even 34“ for some of my casual trousers.

I would recommend it to anyone. There is no doubt that I have more energy and generally feel better and it is the first form of exercise that I have seriously stuck with.

I would recommend the studio to anyone who, like me, wants to be healthy and fit but who always finds a reason to work even harder or longer than is good for you or your family.

It is convenient, fun and as serious as you want it to be with fantastic staff who have the people skills to deal with all eventualities!

The results are not instantaneous but my own lifestyle has not changed at all other than my twice weekly visits for 25 minutes each time, and friends and colleagues have remarked that I appear leaner and meaner!

I certainly feel a lot better than I did without having had to resort to diets and/or more time consuming and exhausting exercise regimes and I have never yet felt sore or stiff the following day as I had expected I might.

I am a natural cynic and doubted that I would continue beyond the first few weeks but I am well and truly hooked to the extent that I now turn out on a Saturday morning as well!

Give it a try-you won’t regret it!
